"Why Don't Young People Vote?"

In the article "Why Don't Young People Vote", Hanan Esaili describes how Millennials compose a large part of the voting population, however majority of them do not vote. They are generally interested in political issues but not strictly supporting either party. The youth of today are "socially liberal but fiscally conservative". Despite the Millennials of today having more access to political issues and news, they are no longer voting because they either don't think it has a direct effect on them or they see government as "inefficient and wasteful". They seem to have the most vocal input on social issues, but do not exercise their right to vote to make a change to those problems. The author wanted to point out that if they were to all vote, they would be the majority and win the election with someone who would make the changes they want. To conclude Hanan urges politicians to reach out towards the young and future voters and urge them to take action and speak up through the vote.

In response to this article, I do generally agree with what the author is stating. Kids, especially in my generation, seem to get so riled up talking about the major political issues but when push comes to shove in the poll, very few of them actually vote. In the graphs presented to us during class, majority of young voters only vote during the presidential elections, not for legislative elections. There is more to government than just the president alone. My generation doesn't know how government works in order to vote. I agree that politicians have not done a good job in engaging Millennials, and I agree with the point in the article that this may be because Millennials are seeking to remove the "corporatocracy" of the political system. I am not a fan of the corporatocracy, but I do not think i can be described as the Millennials in this article, i am very engaged in politics and am registering to vote since I just turned 18. I am also socially more conservative views based upon my religious belief, which the article stated was no longer a factor considered among Millennials.
